Every trip west starts with the bridge, and the bridge sets the clock. On a quiet weekday it adds only the few minutes it takes to cross. On summer weekends, eastbound traffic backs up on Friday afternoons and westbound on Sunday afternoons, and lane work, two-way traffic on one span or high winds can slow things at any time of year.

For a flight, build the bridge into the plan. On a summer weekend, or when lane closures are posted, move the pickup earlier and mention it when you book.

Airport runs for residents and for visitors to the island; trips into Annapolis for dinner, usually 20 to 30 minutes over the bridge; and weddings. The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club in Stevensville and the waterfront spots around Kent Narrows are popular wedding venues, and guests often fly into BWI and stay on either side of the bridge.

For wedding guests, a Sprinter van seats up to 10 and the Corporate Bus up to 32 (quoted on request), booked by the hour so the vehicle runs between the hotel, the ceremony and the reception. Book early for summer and fall Saturdays.
